Avatar Creator: Gaia Online The forum-based website Gaia Online emerged initially as Go-Gaia on February 18, 2003; Gaia Interactive, the developers of the concept relied heavily on the anime linklist with a small community, though it rapidly changed to a social gaming one until recently it took the form of a chat-based forum website. The users of this site are known as Gaians, who create customizable avatars by purchasing items using virtual currency earned through site activities. The site has numerous features, the following being the most popular ones:
§ Gaia Gold: The unit of currency on Gaia, the users are granted it through using any other features on the site that range from forum postings and game playing to commenting in user profiles. Gold also helps in creating guilds and joining them and can be used to buy services like artwork and thread bumping.
§ Guilds: Gaia Gold remaining the prime requisite, users with a similar bent of mind can create or join the guilds that revolve around a single theme if not dedicated to certain causes or goals. Some of the guilds charge entry fee determined by the Guild Captain; he is also entitled to promote other guild members to the posts of Vice Captains or Crew Members who enjoy a certain amount of administrative powers.
§ Sub-forums: Usually bought with gold from the Guild's funds, they are viewable by the members, public and/or crew members.
§ PM: The Private Messaging system on Gaia resembles e-mailing systems, built into the bulletin boards software that runs.
§ Games: Flash and Shockwave games prevail in the Gaia domain, the names being Fishing, Towns, Word Bump, Jigsaw, Slots and Cards.
§ Gaian Quests: Functioning since November 16, 2006, The Quest System allows the users to participate and win rewards.
§ Monthly Collectibles: Effective since June 2003, the Gaia Online donation allows money donors receive items known as Sealed Envelopes. Also known as Monthly Collectibles, some of these rise high up in value significantly and remain based on themes like Hats (named after internet slang terms like OMG or BTK), anime-inspired items, musical instruments etc.
