A carburetor is a part of the bike that is instrumental in mixing air and fuel in correct proportions before the compound enters the engine cylinder.

Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor: Quadrajet is an "air valve" carburetor that senses air flow requirements of the specific engine and meters fuel to those requirements. Even though the carburetor is rated as a 750 or 800 CFM, it can be used on a variety of engines ranging from a Pontiac OHC six cylinder to a Super Duty or Ram Air engine.

The Quadrajet carburetor is a carburetor that has four barrels that mixes air and fuel. Rochester Products Division of General Motors developed this Carburettor. This carburetor was used in all General Motors vehicles until 1990. It was used for the last time in the Oldsmobile 307 V8 engine. This engine was used in Cadillac Brougham and city driven wagons made by Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick.

Used only for passenger vehicles, The Quadrajet is one of the safest and popular carburetors created. The carburetor offers the best compromise of fuel economy, performance, drive ability, and emissions control.

The only disadvantage of the carburetor was that the heat emissions were more and it had a leaky fuel bowl. The carburetor fuel bowl has pressed-in plugs to seal holes. These seal holes remain after fuel passages have been drilled during the manufacturing of the carburetor. These plugs cause the fuel to leak. As a result; (1) the engine is hard to start, (2) the idling is erratic, (3) results in poor mileage, and (4) excessive emissions. In spite of that a properly tuned Quadrajet can be just as efficient and reliable as a bolt-on substitute performance carburetor

Adjusting and Rebuilding a Quadrajet Carburetor: The Carburetor can be rebuilt and adjusted to a persons need. The person would just need to find a perfect combination of a cooler exhaust and good emissions.
There are three basic systems in a q-jet carburetor (1.) idle circuit (2.) primary circuit, which includes the power enrichment system and (3), the secondary circuit.

The carburetor has 73 jets and needs to be installed with a set of .048 primary rods. The APT (Adjustable Part Throttle) needs to set on an ideal condition of two turns out. This stops the heating of the exhaust.

APT(Adjustable Part Throttle) controls the movement of the primary rods within the jets. The power piston has a pin that hits the APT screw and stops it from moving deeper down into the jets. The more the APT screw is turned, the farther out of the jets the rods will stay and the better it will run. Installing bigger jets should be a better perspective because primary rods get smaller, the higher they are positioned within the jets. The part throttle thus becomes more responsive with no engine surge or choke. When emission testing is carried out precautions should be taken, as there are chances of the emission level increasing.
