American Billboard: History of the Music Charts – Billboard, considered to be the Bible of the music industry, has long since opened the doors to their kingdom of music assessment. In spite of extensively covering all dimensions of the music and entertainment industry, the American Billboard is popular for its music charts. In 1940, the American Billboard magazine first published its national music charts to rate and rank the top 10 most popular songs by individual artists.
Initially, there were 3 different charts namely, the ‘Most Played in Juke Boxes’, the ‘Most Played by Jockeys’ and the ‘Best Sellers in Stores’. In 1955, Tom Noonan, who was then in charge of the music charts, came up with the brilliant idea of ranking the top 100 songs. This chart came to be known as the ‘Hot 100’ chart and was based on the highest selling singles, the most sales and the most played songs on the radio and jukeboxes.
Since the Hot 100 chart only listed the sales of all the ‘singles’ tracks, a new chart was created to list the sale of albums. From top pop albums to the best-selling popular albums, this chart had a number of names till 1991. Thereafter, a new technology was developed and introduced, to keep track of sales and playtime and to compile the charts. Thus, the name was changed to Billboard 200. In addition, Billboard also came up with various other charts for all the different genres of music, like R&B, Country and Rap, to name a few.
